Premier League Confirms 90 New COVID-19 cases In Past Week

The Premier League has revealed 90 players and staff tested have positive for Covid-19 over the past week, more than double the previous record this season.

With cases rising throughout the United Kingdom, there have been calls for a break to the festive action, though England’s top flight has confirmed it intends to continue to stage games. The majority of clubs also want to carry on playing despite the recent spike.

Six of the ten Premier League games scheduled for this past week were postponed over positive tests, and the league has now confirmed 90 new cases have been detected.

A statement reads: “The safety of everybody is a priority and the Premier League is taking all precautionary steps in light of the recent rise in COVID-19 cases across the country.

“The League has reverted to its Emergency Measures and has increased testing of players and club staff to daily Lateral Flow and twice-weekly PCR tests, having previously carried out Lateral Flow testing twice a week.

“The League can today confirm that between Monday 13 December and Sunday 19 December, a record 12,345 COVID-19 tests were administered on players and club staff. Of these, there were 90 new positive cases.”

For the week of 6 and 12 December, 42 cases were registered, meaning this is an increase of more than double.

That increase reflects the general state of play across the UK, with a further 91,743 cases reported on Monday, the second-highest daily total on record. The government have not yet issued any new restrictions to go alongside Plan B, but they have said they reserve the possibility of taking action at some point.

Figures on the vaccination of Premier League players have also been released. 77% of players are now double vaccinated against Covid-19 and 84% have received at least one jab.
