Fury As NYSC Opposes Corps Member, Female Soldier Romance
The National Youth Service Corps has backed the Nigerian Army’s decision to detain the female soldier who accepted a marriage proposal from a youth corper at the Yikpata NYSC Orientation Camp in Kwara state.
The NYSC DG, Brigadier General Ibrahim Shuaibu made the stance known during a press briefing on Tuesday.
He said the army was founded on the basis of discipline, and will not tolerate acts that impinge on it lightly
According to Shuaibu, “Every organisation has its own customs and traditions, and we have to abide by it. We, on our part, have spoken to our corps members.
“We encourage them to inter-marry, but we have never had a situation where a corps member will go and propose (to a soldier).
“The Army has its own tradition and they will not joke with it. So, we always tell our corps members to play by the rules.
“I can assure that the army as an institution is built on its customs and traditions, and anything that will impinge on discipline, they will not take it lightly.”
Reacting to the statement by the NYSC DG, social media users expressed disappointment in both the Army and NYSC. Some maintained that the proposal incident did not warrant being locked up for.
Here are some reactions gathered by GreenWhiteGreen
Iliveforever: What kind of country do we really have. So the female soldier should never have joy or doesn’t she have feelings? She should just quit.
Stephenabudu959: Nothing wey person no go see for this Kantry…. To fall in love don turn wahala
Yannisante: Wicked people
Andrea0407: It’s just something lite. Let’s stop making a mountain out of a mole hill. The Nigerian army still needs to uphold some standards even though they have fallen short of some.
Some sympathy for the female soldier
Oche211: This issue has been over flogged. Kilode na, na love she love, she no kill anyone. Nobody is looking at the possibility of them dating even before they got to the camp.
Make them free the dude and the banny. Them no kill anybody. Na love join them together. Is it not the same army that keeps shooting at unarmed civilians and nothing has been done about that.
Let’s start the discussion from those killings and let the army accept it’s culpability in the some many killings in the south.
Jeff1993: And Oyibo said “Love don’t cost a thing”
Guyman02: It was child abuse sorry I meant Corper abuse
Iretii0511: Well, love knows no boundaries.
