The Nigeria media has been in overdrive over reports that First Lady, Aisha Buhari is pregnant. The reports followed pictures of the first lady with what was assumed as a protruding belly on her return with her husband from an official trip to Turkey last weekend.

As the news blew the social media, a news portal added to the controversy with a claim that the First Lady was down with an ailment that reportedly made her belly to protrude.

However, all such insinuations were dismissed on Tuesday when her spokesman, Sulaiman Haruna in an interview with BBC Pidgin dismissed the pregnancy and sickness reports.

“I can tell you 100 percent that our First Lady is perfectly hale hearty and she’s not ill or pregnant as some people report,” he said in ruling out the reports about Aisha Buhari who is 50 as being pregnant.

“Some of these reports are just from mischief-makers who don’t mean well.

“You know nowadays, people can manipulate pictures,” he added.

However, not many would agree with the spokesman that the news of Aisha Buhari being pregnant would be unwelcome to many Nigerians. Indeed, for many it may even be a matter of joy to have a baby in the Presidential Villa as the birth of a baby is normally seen as a thing of joy.

However, a twist came later on Tuesday when it emerged that the First Lady had sent all staff in her office on indefinite leave.

That report amid reports that she is pregnant has bewildered the nation and brought the question as to whether Aisha Buhari is really pregnant?

If Aisha Buhari is pregnant at her age of 50 it would not be shocking given that women at her age become pregnant even without assistance.

She would also not be the first wife of a sitting Nigerian leader to conceive while her husband is in office.

Victoria Gowon and Maryam Babangida conceived while their husbands were in office. However, Aisha Buhari may be the first wife of a democratically elected president to conceive in office if the rumours are really true.

However, the shock for many is that the First Lady already has five children all of whom are now adults. Indeed, it would for some be a shock out of the blues for the First Lady to conceive at this time. The reports have also been associated with claims that she has lived in Dubai in recent times.

Even more, many have also joked that with the situation in the country that they would be surprised that the president has had time for issues in the ‘other room.’

Whatever, if Aisha Buhari is pregnant it would be good news for Nigerians who wish her family well especially given insinuations that have been fed about her bellicose relationship with those in her husband’s inner circle that reportedly prompted her to relocate to Dubai.

It would also be cheery news to the nation that our president is not retired in the affairs of the other room and as such in good position to lead the charge against those bandits who have troubled the nation. That would really be a positive development for the nation and indicative of the presiden’s capacity to root out the bandits before he leaves office.
