Delta Lawmaker Shot As Okowa Calls For Peace
A lawmaker in the Delta State House of Assembly representing Ughelli South Constituency Reuben Izeze Esq, has been reportedly shot by unknown gunmen, a Delta State-based news website, Niger Delta Today has reported.
The incident happened as Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in his Christmas message called on the citizenry to pray for peace.
According to the report, the lawmaker survived the attack which was carried out at close range and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
Izeze before his election was a well-known rights activist. According to the report, Izee was said to have been attacked around the Effurun area of the state.
The incident occurred about 9 pm on Thursday, a source told NIGER DELTA TODAY Online.
It was learned that the Delta lawmaker was returning home when the gunmen suspected to be assassins opened fire on his vehicle and shot him at close range.
The gunmen were said to have kidnapped the lawmaker’s aide but later freed him.
Okowa Calls For Peace At Christmas
Meanwhile, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has enjoined Christians all over to use the occasion of the Christmas holiday to pray for peace in the state and the country.
In a message contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, on Friday in Asaba, the governor urged Christians to offer special prayers during the yuletide for greater peace, love, unity, peaceful co-existence and progress in the state and in the country.
He said that Christmas was a season to show love and care for one another, adding that Nigerians should use the opportunity offered by the season to enthrone peaceful co-existence across the country.
He called for an end to all forms of violent crimes, including banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and insurrection that had become commonplace in the country and huge security challenge to governments at all levels and entire citizenry.
