A Nigerian mother, Mrs Comfort Jiya, former Principal of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Sabon Wuse and Maryam Babangida Girls’ Science College, Minna, has been set ablaze by her biological son.

Daily Trust gathered that the tragic incident happened in Minna, Niger State capital.

Steven, who was described as a drug addict, reportedly returned from Suleja, still in Niger, on Monday and poured petrol on his mother while she was in her kitchen at her residence in Darusalam Area of Minna.

A family source told our correspondent that she died at about 3 pm on Friday at Minna General Hospital where she was receiving treatment.

Another source told our correspondent that Steven had made several attempts to harm his mother but had his way when he poured petrol on her.

The Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, could not be reached for comments as of the time this report was filed.

But Daily Trust gathered that Steven has already been remanded by a Minna high court. The GRA Police division, Minna, had arraigned him in court.

Meanwhile, besides the news of the son who set her Nigerian mother ablaze, the Police in Niger State on Monday solicited the continued support of residents in the fight against banditry, terrorism, cattle rustling, and other security threats.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria   (NAN) in Minna, CP Monday Kuryas assured that measures had been put in place to confront security threats, particularly at the Yuletide season.

He said the command had reached out to traditional and religion leaders as well as stakeholders to mobilise residents to volunteer reliable information on criminal elements in the midst.

The commissioner said with that approach, the police in collaboration with other security agencies would confront miscreants decisively.

He reiterated the commitment of the command to ensure the safety of lives and property of the residents.
