Anthony Martial Has Asked To Leave Man United, Says Rangnick
Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has admitted that Anthony Martial has told him that he wants to leave the club.
The France international has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford in recent weeks after his agent told the media that he is unhappy in Manchester, with Rangnick initially insisting that players should talk to him directly if they are seeking a move away.
Newcastle, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid are among the clubs rumoured to be interested.
Rangnick has now confirmed that the player has personally spoken to him about leaving. But Martial will only be granted a transfer on United’s terms and they are not aware of any interest in him.
“We spoke at length and he explained to me he has been at Manchester United now for the last seven years and he feels it is the right time for a change, to go somewhere else,” Rangnick said ahead of United’s trip to Newcastle on Monday night.
“I think in a way this is understandable. I could follow his thoughts but on the other hand, it’s also important to see the situation of the club.
“We have COVID-19 times, we have three competitions in which we still have high ambitions and want to be as successful as we can be.
“I told him listen, as long as there is no club showing interest in him, and it should not only be in the interest of the player it should also be in the interest of the club – so far, as far as I know, there has been no offer from any other club and as long as this is the case he will stay.”
Rangnick’s switch to a 4-2-2-2 formation has opened up the possibility of United deploying four of their forwards at the same time, but Martial still appears way down the pecking order behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes.
Anthony Elanga has also impressed in recent weeks following Rangnick’s arrival and signed a new long-term deal just before Christmas.
