Orbih Rebuffs Obaseki, Says Local Chapter Can’t Amend PDP Constitution
By GWG Political Editor
In an unpretentious rebuff of the reported efforts by Governor Godwin Obaseki to rejig the executives of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Edo State, Chief Dan Orbih has vowed to protect the interests of the party and also ensure its unity through the provisions of the constitution.
Orbih, the national vice-chairman, South-South of the PDP spoke at a Christmas party he hosted for PDP chieftains and organisers at his Ogbonna country home where he said that the constitution of the party cannot be amended by a local branch to suit the purposes of particular individuals.
The party attended by a mammoth crowd also saw the party chieftains pledge loyalty to Orbih’s leadership and foresight in protecting their interests.
“This party is governed by a constitution and we cannot amend the constitution of our party at any local branch. I will use this opportunity of our celebration to send a strong message to those who are fanning the embers of division in Edo PDP,” Orbih said in his first public reaction to the harmonization exercise spearheaded by Obaseki.
“As a political party we have maintained unity within our party even before the election of the governor and we want to continue to maintain that unity within the PDP family.”
Orbih spoke against the background of recent efforts by Governor Obaseki to ‘harmonise’ the executives of the party across levels in the state to integrate those who came with him from the All Progressives Congress, APC and those who lost in the PDP congresses in 2020 into executive positions.
The Obaseki move has been resisted by many PDP members who insist with Orbih that party positions can only be filled through elections as provided by the party’s constitution.
Harrison Omoagbon state deputy chairman who led members of the State Working Committee, to the party affirmed that the PDP is a valuable asset that they will continue to cherish and protect.
Party chieftains and past governorship aspirants present at the party spoke in the same vein even as they commended Orbih on his steadfastness and leadership.
