COVID-19 Outbreak Rocks LaLiga, With 138 Positive Cases Ahead Of League’s Return

LaLiga have confirmed that there have been 138 COVID-19 cases recorded ahead of the league’s return on 31 December.

The news comes after the Spanish government announced that top-flight games would be played in front of reduced capacities, down to 75% after three months of full crowds.

LaLiga’s high infection rate comes despite the competition having a winter break, something which Premier League fans have been calling for in light of the recent COVID-19 issues at England’s top clubs.

Barcelona are one of the most affected LaLiga sides with 10 positive cases this week. Philippe Coutinho, Dani Alves, Gavi and Jordi Alba are among the first team players who have test positive and will be unavailable for Sunday’s meeting with Mallorca.

Real Madrid have only recorded four cases, but they are all for key first team players. The club’s breakout star in 2021 Vinicius Jr – who has scored 12 goals and assisted seven more this season – has tested positive for COVID-19 along with first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and midfielders Fede Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga.

The other top club in LaLiga, Atletico Madrid, are also affected with five members of the first team squad and Diego Simeone all testing positive. As a result, Atleti will have to do without their manager for their clash with Rayo Vallecano this Sunday.

The worst affected club in Spain’s top flight is Elche, who have announced 12 positive cases. Despite this rate of infection, according to Marca there are currently no plans to postpone any of this weekend’s games.

LaLiga have confirmed that there have been 138 COVID-19 cases recorded ahead of the league’s return on 31 December.
