This season’s FA Cup kicked off to a flyer as teams all over England began their quest to emerge champions of the oldest club competition in world football history with some key facts emerging.
The FA Cup which was established in July 1871 is arguably the oldest association football competition in the world and is one of England’s most cherished competitions. Loved by the fans, the tournament has been nicknamed “The competition of the underdogs” for its unpredictability and thrilling encounters. These are the key facts from Saturday’s FA Cup openers:
61 – There were just 61 seconds between Jan Bednarek’s own goal putting Swansea ahead and Mohammed Elyounoussi equalising for Southampton.
2011 – Emiliano Darcondes is the first Danish player to score an FA Cup hat-trick since Niklas Bendtner for Arsenal against Leyton Orient in March 2011.
2003 – Akwasi Asante is the first non-league player to score an FA Cup goal against a side in the top two of the Premier League since Rocky Baptiste for Farnborough town against Arsenal at Highbury in January 2003.
17 – One of the key facts on Saturday was that Lewis Hall became the youngest player in Chelsea history to start an FA Cup game only being 17 years and 122 days old.
5 – Chelsea have scored 5 goals in the compeititon for the first time since February 2016 against Manchester City, a match in which all five goals were also scored by five different players.
