AFCON: Super Eagles Put Egpyt To The Sword In 1-0 Win
The Super Eagles of Nigeria recorded a convincing 1-0 win over the Pharaohs of Egypt in their Group D Africa Cup of Nations opener in Garoua.
The scoreline didn’t flatter the Super Eagles, as they control proceedings from the start, with Moses Simon providing a real spark for Nigeria on the left flank.
The Super Eagles looked very well organised and played like a well-drilled team against the Egyptians, pressing as a unit and neat with their distribution.
Simon had the chance to put Nigeria ahead, but his effort in the 25th minute hit the side-netting.
The Super Eagles got their goal to reward their dominance in the 29th minute, courtesy of a powerful Kelechi Iheanacho strike.
Iheanacho, Simon and Awoniyi continued to link up well, putting the Egyptians on the back foot throughout the first half.
The lively Taiwo Awoniyi thought he had made it 2-0 early in the second half, but his header was adjudged to have been saved right on the line.
A poor touch then robbed Iheanacho of the chance to slot into an empty net, before the quiet Salah was crowded out just in time as he got a feeble shot away in a rare sighting of goal for Egypt.
Up next for the Super Eagles is a clash against Sudan, in which a victory secures qualification to the knockout stages, while Egypt will be looking to make amends and keep their qualification hopes alive with a win against Guinea-Bissau.
