AFCON: The Lineup Nigeria Need To Overcome Egypt
By Eze Dike
Nigeria will play their first group game at the Stade Omnisport Roumdé Adjia (Garoua) against Egypt, as Group D in the 33rd edition of the AFCON, is set to open with a bang with two of the continent’s elite going head to head.
The Super Eagles are of course eager to start the competition on the front foot and hope to make their intentions clear in Tuesday’s clash with Egypt. The game is expected to be a thrilling showdown as a host of world class players grace the stage for the first match in Group D. On top of that list is Egypt’s Mohammed Salah who Nigeria have to keep a close eye on, Nigeria themselves possess great strength in attack and in midfield with Wilfred Ndidi and Samuel Chukwueze hoping to fire the Super Eagles past the Pharaohs.
For Tuesday’s game, Nigeria’s head coach Austin Eguavoen is expected to name a very strong starting XI to see them have the edge over Egypt.
Despite missing out on key players such as Odion Ighalo, Emmanuel Dennis and star man Victor Osimhen due to injury, they still have a big squad to pick from.
Formation
Nigeria will have to set up with a strong defensive shape to see out Egypt’s strong attack, and can line up in a 5-4-1 formation with Maduka Okoye in goal.
Defence
Experienced Kenneth Omeruo, Troost Ekong and Leon Balogun could form a three-man central defensive line with Ola Aina and Porto’s Zaidu Sanusi playing as full-backs leaving no room for the dangerous Mo Salah.
Midfield
Ever reliant Wilfred Ndidi and Joseph Aribo should form a narrow midfield partnership while the elegant Samuel Chukwueze and Captain Ahmed Musa occupy the two spots on the flank.
Attack
Kelechi Iheanacho is expected to lead the attack line for Nigeria against Egypt.
