President Muhammadu Buhari has given approval for the ban on the operations of Twitter to be lifted, it was announced on Wednesday. The suspension of the ban placed on Twitter is to be lifted from midnight on Tuesday.

The announcement was made by the Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement and Director-General National Information Technology Development Agency, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi.

Abdullahi, in a statement in Abuja, said the approval was given following a memo written to the President by Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim which also detailed agreements reached between the Nigerian government and Twitter.

Among the agreements by Twitter was that the United States based company would register its presence in Nigeria in the first quarter of the year, 2022. Twitter has also agreed to paying taxes in the country.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the Federal Government of Nigeria suspended the operations of Twitter in the country after a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari was deleted by the company for supposedly violating its policies.

The deletion of the tweet was taken with strong disapproval by the Nigerian authroities who alleged that even more damaging tweets by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB were regularly allowed by the company. The decision of the Nigeria government to lift the ban on Twitter is expected to energise the polity especially with the increase in politicking ahead of the 2023 General Election.
