AFCON 2021: Debutants Comoros Qualify For The Knockout Rounds
By Eze Dike
Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON underdogs, Comoros have made history qualifying for the knockout rounds on their first ever appearance in the competition at the expense of more seasoned group members including Ghana.
Drawn in the same group as Africa’s giants Morocco and Ghana alongside Gabon, Comoros were for sure predicted to be the team to come last in the group where they were clear underdogs.
Comoros, however, shocked the continent and the footballing world at large with a qualification to the knockouts. After losing their first two group games to eventual group winners, Morocco and Gabon who came second, Comoros seemed to have their faith already summed up.
Going into the final group game against the Black Stars of Ghana, Comoros had nothing to play for. A surprisingly outstanding performance saw them stun Ghana 3-2 to see them claim their first ever win in the history of the competition, thus reigniting a glimpse of hope to qualify. Comoros eventually finished the group in 3rd place and went to the knockout rounds as the group’s best losers.
The qualification has been hailed as a massive achievement for the competition’s debutants. Comoros only joined the Confederation of African Football, CAF family in 2003 and were recognised by FIFA in 2005. Comoros was ranked 132nd in the world and had never featured in the AFCON tournament and the qualification for the knockout is bound to be received with joy in the island nation of one million people.
