AFCON: Five Key Facts From Nigeria’s Group Stage Matches

Austin Eguavoen’s soaring Super Eagles were the cynosure of all eyes as they picked up three wins from three games in Group D of AFCON 2021 and in the process, pushing through key facts that distinguish the team. They were the only team to conquer all their opponents in the group stage repeating the feat they last achieved in the 2006 AFCON tournament when Eguavoen was also the handler.

 GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports five key facts from Nigeria’s group stage performance as the team gets set to confront Tunisia in their first knockout challenge.

1. Austin Eguavoen has been involved in all AFCON tournaments in which the Super Eagles won all three group matches – 1992, 2006 & 2021.

2. Moses Simon has completed the most dribbles (15) so far at AFCON 2021 which was one of the key facts that have drawn attention to him and the Nigerian team. His 15 dribbles are five more than his closest rival.

3. Wilfred Ndidi has the most tackles and most  ball recoveries of AFCON 2021 so far.

4. For the first time since the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, the first 5 goals for Nigeria in an AFCON tournament were scored by 5 different Nigerians – Iheanacho, Chukwueze, Awoniyi, Simon, Sadiq.

5. Nigeria is the only country to collect 9 points in AFCON 2021.

One of the key facts so far, is that the last time just one nation managed to finish the group stage with the full marks in an Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON tournament was in 2010 and the nation was Egypt who went on to win the title.
