Nigeria’s Super Eagles players are up against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in the round of 16 of AFCON 2021. The last time these African heavyweights clashed, Nigeria went on to defeat Tunisia in the third-place match at AFCON 2019.

While 12 Tunisian players will be absent due to COVID-19, these are five players to rely on to secure victory against the North Africans.

1. Moses Simon – Every defender’s nightmare at AFCON 2021 is Moses Simon who has been too hot to handle so far. The Nantes winger has the highest number of completed dribbles of the tournament. His pace, quick feet, agility and tenacity to deliver the goods from the flank make him extremely hazardous.

2. Kelechi Iheanacho – Egypt will still be feeling hard done by as a result of Kelechi Iheanacho’s crackerjack of a goal in Nigeria’s opening game of the group stage. Senior man Kelz as he is often called, has shown that he is a sharpshooter and possesses sublime vision to provide classic assists like the one he conjured up for Sadiq Umar against Guinea-Bissau.

3. Joe Aribo – The Rangers midfielder is an epitome of pure class as a box-to-box midfielder. He knows how to control the tempo of the game, tackle, pass and shoot at will. Coach Austin Eguavoen is blessed to have such incredible talent at his disposal. He is indeed one of the key players Nigeria will rely on against Tunisia.

4. Wilfred Ndidi – Just like the way a king protects his kingdom, Big Wilf guards the back four in the defense, courtesy of his heroics in defensive midfield. Recoveries, interceptions, combativeness and other amazing qualities he has in his locker, the Leicester City man is always efficacious.

5. William Troost-Ekong – Not many people gave the stand-in captain armband a chance at Africa’s biggest football fiesta following his sloppiness in the heart of the defense at Watford in the Premier League. However, he has silenced his critics, picked himself up, and shown why he is the leader from the defense. His goal in the final group game against Guinea-Bissau was needed to boost morale ahead of the knockout stages.
