Cameroon brushed aside the resilent debutants from The Gambia on Saturday to roar into the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2021.

Cameroon had been considered favourites to emerge champions in this year’s edition and they were determined to show just why. Gambia on the other hand were looking to produce yet another upset in the tournament as they featured in their first-ever appearance in Africa’s biggest fiesta.

Unsurprisingly, the game began with a blistering pace and both teams were looking sharp as ever possessing the ball cleverly. Cameroon had the better chances in the first half but failed to make the most of their lethal attacking abilities. The first half ended goalless with Gambia the happier outfit considering their underdog status prior to the game.

The Indomitable Lions came out roaring in the second half and five minutes since the restart, Karl Toko Ekambi rose highest in the box to steer home a close range header from Collins Fai’s superb delivery. The Lyon forward showing once again as he has done throughout the tournament, how important he is to the team. Seven minutes from getting the opener, Toko Ekambi scored his and Cameroon’s second to take his tally to five goals in the competition so far, just a goal behind compatriot Vincent Aboubakar. The hosts had loads of chances before the end of the game but could not convert and increase their two-goal deficit. Ekambi’s two goals were enough as Cameroon ended Gambia’s first time AFCON adventure with a 2-0 win.

The celebrations at the Japoma stadium in Douala were bizzare, absolute euphoria for the whole nation of Cameroon as the hosts march on to the semi finals of the AFCON 2021 to continue their quest for their 6th African crown in their history.
