Why PDP Deputy Senate Leader, Bwacha Defected To APC
In a major setback for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP the party’s number two man in the Senate, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha on Thursday defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
The defection GreenWhiteGreen GWG gathered was stirred by local political issues on ground in Taraba State.
Bwacha was received into the APC by President Muhammadu Buhari alongside the Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari. He had been taken to the Presidential Villa by the chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee and governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni.
The defection signaled the prospects of a major political reconfiguration in Taraba State where the PDP has prevailed since 1999. Reflective of that tide, the APC for the first time would now have two senators from Taraba State.
Sources close to Bwacha disclosed that the senator defected to the APC to actualize his political aspiration to be governor of the uphill state.
“He is defecting to the APC to actualize his governorship aspiration given that Governor Darius Ishaku will never allow him the opportunity to actualize that dream under a free and fair atmosphere,” a political ally of Senator Bwacha told GreenWhiteGreen GWG.
For the PDP it is also the second time in a successive Senate that a principal official would defect.
Senator Godswill Akpabio as Senate Minority Leader defected from the PDP to join the APC in 2018. However, his bid to win re-election on the platform of his new party collapsed in the 2019 Senate election.
