Zamfara Lawmakers Commence Impeachment Move Against Deputy Governor

The Zamfara State House of Assembly has commenced the process for impeachment of the Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu Mohammed Gusau with the articulation of a petition for his impeachment.

However, the impeachment petition,  GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports is shadowed by the crisis of confidence between Governor Bello Matawalle and his deputy, Mahdi Aliyu Mohammed Gusau following the governor’s defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The governor and nearly all existing structures of the PDP defected to the APC last year including all members of the National Assembly and State House of Assembly with the notable exception of Hon. Yahaya Kabiru Classic, member representing the Anka/Talata/Mafara Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

The deputy governor had boldly rejected moves to defect along with the governor and had following the governor’s defection continued to rally the PDP together in the state as leader.

The PDP had taken control of all the structures in the state following a 2019 Supreme Court judgement that said that the APC was ineligible to have fielded candidates in all the elections in the state.

The commencement of the impeachment move against the deputy governor came on Friday vide a petition filed by the Deputy Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Hon Musa Bawa Musa which was submitted to Speaker Nasiru Mu’azu for the impeachment.

It was gathered that the members are accusing the deputy governor of financial fraud and breach of trust among others.

The deputy governor is the son of the influential erstwhile National Security Adviser and Chief of Army Staff, General Aliyu Gusau.
