Egyptian goalkeeper and hero of the runner-up team in the African Cup of Nations, AFCON, Mohamed Qotb Abou Gabal Ali, popularly known as Gabaski has said that the Man of the Match awarded him in the final match means nothing to him.
He spoke in an interview after Egypt lost the AFCON final match on penalties 2-4 despite his heroic efforts.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Gabaski saved one penalty in the course of the game and also saved one during the penalty shootout. His Senegalese counterpart and Chelsea goalkeeper who emerged the goalkeeper of the tournament, however, did better during the shootout having thwarted two kicks from the Egyptian players.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG had earlier reported that Senegal won the African Cup of Nations, AFCON tournament on Sunday, February 6, 2022 after it defeated Egypt on penalty kicks after 120 minutes of cautious play from two of Africa’s leading teams.
The game was extended to extra time after Senegal lost the chance to score a goal through a penalty at the sixth minute when Sadio Mane had his effort saved by Egypt’s goal keeper, Mohamed Qotb Abou Gabal Ali, popularly known as Gabaski.
Egypt came to the penalty shoot out with the experience of having beaten Morocco and Cameroon through penalty shoot outs.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that at the end of the 90th minute of mostly defensive play by both sides that expectation that a winner will come during the extra-time did not come to pass. In the history of the AFCON since 1960 a winner has never emerged during extra-time.
Despite the penalty loss, Senegal had more of the opportunities at goal but were repeatedly denied by Gabaski at the AFCON final match.
