Victor Osimhen Scores First Goal Of The Year As Napoli Win 2-0
By Eze Dike
Napoli striker Victor Osimhen scored his first goal of 2022 against Venezia in Serie A since his return after a three-month injury lay off after he broke his eye socket last November.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Osimhen was in red-hot form at the start of the season scoring five goals in 11 league appearances and also nudging up three UEFA Europa League goals to help Napoli stay in contention for a European prize.
Unfortunately for the big Nigerian striker, injury hit him hard and brought a temporary stop to his dazzling run of form. The injury also prevented him from being included in the Super Eagles squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2021 that ended on Sunday.
After disappointingly bowing out of the competition in just the Round of 16 following a stunning group stage performance, many Nigerians believe that Osimhen’s absence was the missing piece for the Super Eagles as their failure to make their chances count, saw Tunisia capitalise and knock them out.
However, Osimhen made his full return to the Napoli starting line up on Saturday as he led the front line against Venezia. He got the first goal of the game in the 50th minute with a beautifully planted header into the right side of the goal from close range.
His return has reignited his team’s drive and passion for a title challenge as Napoli struggled to keep up with the two Milan teams during his absence dropping position during his absence.
Osimhen’s return on Saturday spearheaded Napoli into a 2-0 win as they moved up to 2nd position on the league table, putting pressure on League leaders, Inter who are just a point above them with a game in hand.
