Video: Moment Catholic Priest Banned Igbo During Mass
The video of the moment that Rev. Fr. James Anelu, the Parish Priest of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ewu-Owa Gberigbe in Ikorodu, Lagos, banned Igbo songs during mass in his parish has come to the fore.
In a video posted on Linda Ikeji Blog, Fr Anelu was heard justifying his ban of the use of Igbo songs in his parish saying that he was stopped from presiding over a burial in Ekwulobia, Anambra State by the Catholic hierarchy in the area because he could not speak Igbo.
His assertion in the parish was, however, visibly opposed by parish members forcing the priest to assert that those opposing the ban were opposing God.
The priest is heard saying amid strong murmuring from his congregation that every church has its own rules as he tried to justify his action.
Many in the congregation made attempt to walk out on him even as the priest stuck to his guns as he charged those who were aggrieved to see him after mass.
However, some in the congregation continued to mutter against the priest as they claimed that his decision to ban Igbo was taken during the mass.
The Archdiocese has since disowned him and sent him on indefinite suspension on the claim that his action was against the principles of the church.
