Leicester City FC of England player Ademola Lookman has been cleared by world football governing body, FIFA to represent Nigeria, the Nigeria Football Federation announced on Thursday.

The clearance now makes Leicester the English club with the highest number of players in Nigeria’s national team. The team already have Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Ihenacho as regulars in the national team.

Emilio Garcia Silveiro, FIFA’s Chief Legal and Compliance Officer, conveyed FIFA’s decision to the NFF  Thursday following the decision of the Single Judge of the Status Chamber of the Football Tribunal:

“The request made by the NFF – Nigeria Football Federation for a change of association of the player Ademola Olajide Lookman is accepted.

“The player Ademola Olajide Lookman is eligible to play for the representative teams of the NFF – Nigeria Football Federation with immediate effect.”

Welcoming the decision, the NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi gushed over the record time it took FIFA to approve the decision given that the application was made only on Wednesday.

“We sent in the application on Wednesday night after putting all the necessary documentation together. We are happy to receive the approval today.”

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that before this development on Ademola Lookman, that FIFA had in December 2021, also approved the NFF’s application for the switch in allegiance for Ashleigh Megan Plumptre to represent Nigeria internationally.

Both Lookman and Plumptre had represented England at various junior cadres.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG had earlier reported that Nigeria moved from fifth to third position in Africa behind only Senegal and Morocco after overtaking Algeria and Tunisia in the latest global football rankings. That was despite an early exit from the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON in Cameroon.

While AFCON winners, Senegal remain the best team, followed by Morocco, Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Cameroon, Algeria, Mali and the Ivory Coast in that order to make up the top 10 best teams on the continent.
