Five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Champions League winner five times and the highest goalscorer in men’s international football, Cristiano Ronaldo needs no introduction when breaking records are mentioned in football.

Currently, Manchester United’s most decorated player, Ronaldo is a born winner and has redefined what it means to be a footballer for most of his adult life.

His superb physical condition and charismatic presence on the field have made him a legend. In September, the Portugal captain scored his 800th career goal and became the all-time men’s international goal scorer, to add to his ever expanding record book. When receiving his award at the FIFA Best Awards show for the his incredible achievement on the international scene, the Portuguese made his intentions clear as he stated that he is no where near retirement and will continue to fight to accomplish more. This drive opens the doors for potential records and below are two records Ronaldo can still break before retirement;

• The most Champions League titles in the history of the competition

In Europe, Cristiano Ronaldo won his first Champions League title in 2008 with Manchester United, playing an influential role throughout the tournament as he ended as the top scorer. Mr Champions League as he if often recognised, went on to win it four times with European giants Real Madrid, including winning it a historic three times in a row. Galacticos Legend, Paco Gento who passed away a few weeks ago, boasts a record of six European Cups, but Ronaldo is on his way to becoming the first player to win the Champions League six times. The first obstacle to Ronaldo and Manchester United to the record will be his favourite opponents, Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16.

Man United’s top scorer in the Champions League

Although the Portuguese is the highest goalscorer in the history of the competition, he is not United’s top scorer. Ruud Van Nistelrooy  has 35 goals in 43 appearances, making him the club’s most successful marksman in the competition. In the group stage of this year’s Champions League, Ronaldo scored six goals but 15 more will allow him surpass the Dutchman’s record. There’s more to Van Nistelrooy’s achievement that he is targeting, as eight goals in the knockout stage will beat the number of goals the Dutchman scored in the 2002-03 campaign. Ronaldo’s confidence needs no questioning, and you can never write off a man of this calibre as Wayne Rooney’s club record of 253 goals in all competitions looks a difficult but achievable task for Ronaldo.
