Breaking: Zamfara Deputy Governor Impeached As Battle With Governor Reaches Climax
The Zamfara House of Assembly on Wednesday impeached the state deputy governor Mahadi Aliyu from office following the adoption of a report by a panel of investigation set up to investigate him days ago.
The panel began sitting two days ago.
The removal followed the adoption of a motion by Majority Leader, Faruku Dosara (APC -Maradun 1) at the plenary of the House of Assembly in Gusau.
The motion came shortly after the House adopted the report of Justice Haladu Tanko panel which investigated allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office against the deputy governor.
Speaker Nasiru Muazu, who presided over the sitting, directed the Clerk Saidu Anka, to conduct a vote on the impeachment of deputy governor Mahadi Aliyu from office.
Twenty out of the 22 lawmakers present, voted in favour of the impeachment and the Zamfara deputy governor was pronounced impeached and as such removed from office.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the House had at its sitting on February 7, served the Aliyu with a Notice of Impeachment over alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The state Chief Judge, Justice Kulu Aliyu, also on Feb. 14, inaugurated an investigative panel on the deputy governor following a request by the lawmakers on Feb. 10. (NAN)
GreenWhiteGreen GWG, however, reports that the deputy governor had obtained an injunction against the panel and the procedure and as such refused to make an appearance before the panel.
The move against the deputy governor followed his refusal to defect along with Governor Matawalle to the All Progressives Congress, APC when the governor and most of the elected political office holders crossed over to the APC last year.
The impeached deputy governor is the son of erstwhile National Security Adviser and former Chief of Army Staff, General Aliyu Gusau.
