Schalke have confirmed they will no longer display Russian energy corporation Gazprom on their shirts following the escalation of conflict in Ukraine.

Russian forces have invaded Ukraine in the past few days, with missile strikes and explosions being reported near major cities.

There have been reports of civilian casualties, while the Ukrainian military has also claimed to have shot down at least six Russian aircraft.

A meeting has been called by UEFA for Friday to discuss the Russian invasion, with the Champions League final expected to be moved away from the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg.

Gazprom have been sponsoring Schalke since 2006 but the Bundesliga side have now revealed they will no longer display the moniker on their shirts as a result of the escalation of aggression from Russia.

Their statement reads: “In view of the events, development and escalation of the past few days, FC Schalke 04 has decided to remove the lettering of its main sponsor – “GAZPROM” – from the jerseys.

“This step follows discussions with GAZPROM Germania. Instead, “Schalke 04″ will be on the chest of the Royal Blues.”

Fellow Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund have also condemned the invasion, stating: “We are shocked and saddened that war has broken out on European soil. BVB strongly condemns this blatant violation of international law! Our thoughts are with the people in Ukraine.”

Ukraine’s domestic season had been due to resume this weekend after their winter break but will remain suspended.

FIFA is also due to meet on Thursday ahead of scheduled World Cup play-off matches in March. Russia face Poland and Ukraine take on Scotland with both matches set for 24 March.
