Four Key Facts As Liverpool Claim League Cup Crown Over Chelsea
By Eze Dike
An exhilarating game of football that featured two of the best teams in the land was settled on penalties, as Liverpool edged out Chelsea to win the 2021-22 League Cup.
It was the first time in four seasons that Manchester City were not involved in the final of the League Cup. Liverpool and Chelsea had grabbed the opportunity for the domestic silverware after they made it into the final impressively beating Arsenal and Tottenham respectively in the semifinals.
Sunday’s game was one to remember for all viewers worldwide. It was evenly balanced in the first 45 minutes with both teams creating goalscoring opportunities but heroics from both keepers kept the game deadlocked.
However, Mason Mount had the best chance to score but flopped his lines as the two sides went into the break unseparated. The Englishman was on the end of another Chelsea attack early in the second half but again he was unable to find his scoring boots missing a one on one situation with the goalkeeper as he struck the bottom right post. Edouard Mendy was incredible from start to finish and he produced more saves in the second half to keep his side in the game.
Joel Matip and Romelu Lukaku both had their goals for either side ruled out for offside by VAR pushing the game to penalties.
Kepa Arrizabalaga was the villain this time as he missed the decisive spot kick after he was brought on by Thomas Tuchel to replace the impeccable Mendy, handing Liverpool their first Carabao Cup trophy under Jurgen Klopp.
Here are key facts from the Liverpool victory over Chelsea in the League Cup final;
• Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has won the 10th trophy of his managerial career – five with Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga x2, DFL-Super Cup x2, DFB-Pokal) and five with Liverpool (Premier League, Champions League, Super Cup, Club World Cup and League Cup).
• Liverpool has won the League Cup for the ninth time in their history; now an outright record, surpassing Manchester City.
• Liverpool’s 11-10 penalty shootout win over Chelsea is the highest scoring penalty shootout between two English top-flight teams.
• Edouard Mendy has now kept a clean sheet in the Champions League final, Africa Cup of Nations final, and League cup final. All in the space of one year.
