Barcelona Gradually Returning To Glory Days Under Xavi
By Eze Dike
Catalan giants FC Barcelona went through different emotions through the course of the 2021-22 season. Erratic performances characterised the first half of the season, but after the club parted ways with Dutch coach Ronald Koeman, all seems to be shaping up nicely for them.
Club Legend, Xavi was appointed as new manager despite his little experience in coaching after previously coaching Al Saad in the Saudi Arabian League where we was indeed successful.
Since taking up the reigns at Camp Nou, the Spaniard has transformed the Blaugrana into a formidable attacking force, balancing play with a new attractive style of play that rings bells of the ‘old’ Barcelona which he was part of as a player.
Although, he could not keep them in the Champions League as the damage was already done in the first few matches of the group stage, Xavi has now placed Barcelona as one of the favourites to win the Europa League this season as they put in a commanding display away to Napoli in the second leg winning 2-4 to advance to the next round.
aBarcelona have also been incredible domestically as they currently sit in 4th position behind Real Betis with just one point and a game in hand. And following their resounding 4-0 victory at home against Atletico Bilbao, they now extend their unbeaten run in the league to ten games as they sit in pole position to return back to the Champions League next season.
All of Xavi’s exploits and success so far all boils down to an impressive January transfer window for Barcelona as they recruited four players during that time. Dani Alves who returned for a second spell and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined on a free transfer, while Adama Traore is on loan from Wolves and Ferran Torres signed from Manchester City for fee around £38million. All four players have been key to the team’s improvement recently most notably being the former Arsenal striker who has now five goals in his last three games for Barcelona including a stunning hat trick at the Mestalla against Valencia. Barcelona may have started this season poorly and perhaps have been written off by most, but the appointment of Xavi have reignited hopes of a possible route back to the epitome of world football.
