The moves by Governor Godwin Obaseki to harmonise and restructure the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP executive structures at the ward, Local Government and State levels in Edo State suffered a major set back on Thursday after a Federal High Court ruled against tampering with the elected executive committees.

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja in a restraining order against the PDP national chairman and the PDP said the party cannot work against its established constitution in tampering with the executive committees before the next congress due in 2024.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Governor Obaseki had in the last one year since winning his second term after joining the PDP from the All Progressives Congress, APC in June 2020 has been harping on altering the executive committees to accommodate those who came with him from the APC.

However, the PDP base in Edo State has so far resisted, insisting that the executive officers came by way of election and that while the Obaseki supporters were welcome to stay in the party but that they cannot alter the structure they met.

The issue came to a climax recently when the deputy governor of the state, Comrade Philip Shaibu during a reception for the national chairman, Senator Iyorcha Ayu warned that they had options to go.

The issue led to a stinging rebuke from Governor Nyesom Wike which escalated to Obaseki and Wike entering into a public spat.

Ruling in the case brought by the Assistant State secretary of the party, Baba Sheriff Idenobemhe, the judge ruled that the PDP cannot go against its own constitution by allowing the tinkering of the executives before the next congress in 2024.

The import of the court judgment is that further efforts by Obaseki to tinker with the PDP executive committes in Edo State outside the prescribed manner would be considered nullity.

A large section of the PDP state exco and all local government party chairmen were present as the court gave judgment on Thursday.
