There have been mixed reactions on social media over a claim made by acclaimed Nigerian music journalist, Joey Akan on Twitter.

According to Akan in a tweet on his official Twitter handle @JoeyAkan, he claimed that Yahoo boys (internet fraudsters) help sustain the Afrobeats industry in Nigeria.

See the tweet below

“Afrobeats Hall of Fame will never be complete without honourary mentions to Yahoo boys who funded and kept alive an industry with no institutional or corporate funding. It’s a reality we hate to admit, but huge parts of Nigerian music history and success were built on cybercrime.

In reaction to his claim, some users backed him up, while other reminded him that the American rap scene was also sustained by drug money.
