Gunmen Attack Imo Community, kill INEC staff

There was pandemonium on Thursday as gunmen numbering 12 attacked some adhoc staff members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Nkwo Ihitte market, Imo State.

It was learnt that INEC Adhoc Staff were registering members of the community for the 2023 general elections when the gunmen attacked.

INEC officer in charge of the registration process was shot by the unknown gunmen.

Confirming the attack, an eyewitness, Chief Okpegbuo, said: “We had all gathered in the village square in obedience to the directive that we should come out en masse to register.

“Not long we queued, the Gunmen came in, shot sporadically, hoarded many into a room with a threat to kill them while others scampered for safety.”

As of the time of filing this report, the gunmen were said to have killed an INEC official, while the total number of death is unclear.

In other news, gunmen invaded a residential area in Tsafe town, the headquarters of Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State and abducted five students of the College of Health Science and Technology, Tsafe on Wednesday morning.


GWG gathered that the heavily armed men stormed their residence outside the school campus in the early hours of Wednesday, April 13 and whisked the students away to unknown destination.

A source in the area said that the bandits could not gain entrance to the school due to the heavy presence of security personnel.

The source, however, said one of the students escaped from the abductors.

Security operatives are yet to make a comment about the incident.
