What We Learn From Arsenal’s 3-1 Win Over Manchester United

Seeking a UEFA Champions League qualification via the much-loved fourth spot, Arsenal stormed to their first home win in three matches with a 3-1 victory over Manchester United, condemning the Red Devils to a fourth consecutive away defeat in the top-flight for the first time since 1981.

Two minutes and 14 seconds was what it took for the hosts to get the first goal. Bukayo Saka made the most of United’s dreadful defending once again this season, forcing David De Gea into a wonderful save, only to then see the new signing Nuno Tavares pounce on the rebound to net his first goal for the Gunners.

The visitors came agonisingly close to an equaliser as Diogo Dalot’s long range effort came off the crossbar. Arsenal then stretched their lead to two goals as Bukayo Saka scored from the penalty spot after a VAR review confirmed he was fouled in the box. Arsenal’s lead was cut short just two minutes later though, as Cristiano Ronaldo scored a typical poacher’s goal from a tantalising Nemanja Matic cross to give his side a lifeline back into the game.

Bruno Fernandes spurned the opportunity to make it 2-2 when he missed from the spot for the second time this season as his effort came off the post. Granit Xhaka sealed the deal for Arsenal, ferociously drilling in an insane long range strike to make it 3-1 and put the game beyond United. After beating Chelsea and Manchester United in the space of a week, Mikel Arteta’s men now sit in 4th position, two points clear of Tottenham Hotspur and now look to be in the driving seat to play Champions League football next season. Here are key facts from the game;

• Bruno Fernandes is the first Manchester United player to miss the target with two penalties in a single Premier League season since Teddy Sherringham in 1997-98.

• At 20 years and 230 days, Bukayo Saka is the youngest player in Premier League history to score a penalty in consecutive appearances.

• Cristiano Ronaldo is the first player in history to score 100+ goals in both La Liga and the Premier League:

La Liga – 292 games, 311 goals

Premier League – 223 games, 100 goals

• Cristiano Ronaldo is the fourth player to score 100 Premier League goals for Manchester United (also Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney)- the joint most of any club (Liverpool also four).

• Nuno Tavares is the first player whose first ever goal for Arsenal came against Manchester United since Fredik Ljunberg in September 1998
