2023: Why MURIC Rejected Sanwo-Olu’s Endorsement

The Muslim Rights Concern, (MURIC), on Monday opposed the decision of All Progressives Congress, (APC) endorsing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State for a second term in office. The group hinged its rejection on the reason that it would deny Muslims opportunity to produce the next governor in the state.

They argued that by 2023, a Christian would have spent eight years in power with the four years of his predecessor, Akinwunmi Ambode.  MURIC in a statement described the endorsement by APC as unfair and provocative.  The group disclosed that the endorsement was capable of garnering block votes against the governor if there was no agreement reached between MURIC and the Lagos State government.

The demand by MURIC is despite the fact that the first two governors of the state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Mr. Babatunde Fashola are Muslims.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that last Monday, the Governance Advisory Council, (GAC) the highest decision making organ of the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC) in Lagos State endorsed Sanwo-Olu for a second term in office.  GAC believed the governor has performed very well and deserved to be given another chance.

But not comfortable with the endorsement of Sanwo-Olu, MURIC in a statement declared, “We therefore fault the process that led to the emergence of the incumbent governor as the flagbearer of the ruling party in the coming gubernatorial election. 2023 belongs to Muslims in Lagos State. Any deviation from this must be properly negotiated.

“For instance, if the Christians are going to enjoy the luxury of a third term by giving Sanwo-Olu the mandate to run for a second term, an agreement must be reached with Lagos Muslims guaranteeing twelve years of Muslim rule after Governor Sanwo-Olu. Anything short of this is tantamount to an attempt to shortchange Muslims in the state”.

MURIC claimed the endorsement of Sanwo-Olu violated the unwritten agreement on power rotation between Christians and Muslims in Lagos State but fell short of admitting that Tinubu and Fashola governoed for 16 years at a stretch.

By 2023, when Nigeria would have had 24 years of interrupted democracy, the Muslims must had been in power for 16 years in Lagos.
