Why APC Is Delaying Zoning Of Presidential Ticket
By Augusting Adah
With barely one month until its presidential primaries, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is yet to decide on the zoning of its presidential ticket. The National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Adamu on Friday confirmed the unpreparedness of the party to announce its decision on zoning at least at the moment.
Though Adamu did not disclose why it is taking the party too long to decide on the matter, analysts believe the party may be buying time and watching where the Peoples’ Democratic Party,( PDP) would zone its presidential ticket.
Since the Governor Samuel Ortom led committee on zoning submitted its report to the National Working Committee, (NWC) of the PDP, Nigerians have been left guessing over the party’s decision on zoning.
Going by the tradition of the party, it wouldn’t be a difficult thing for the APC to decide on zoning since the National Chairman of the party is from the North; the obvious thing to do is to zone the presidential position to the south.
In the past eight years the party has been in power, the national chairmen of the party in person of John Oyegun and Adams Oshiomhole were from the south while the President comes from the North.
While the waiting game continues, some stalwarts of the party are advising the party leaders to respect the zoning pattern in the party in order to avoid implosion.
For instance, Umar Duhu, pioneer National Vice Chairman of APC (North-East), urged the party to shift power to south-west in 2023 to avoid a crisis.
Some groups in the party have also warned the leadership of the party against adopting consensus as was done with the case of the election of Adamu Abdullahi as national chairman.
Speaking to GreenWhiteGreen GWG on the matter, a chieftain of the party in Lagos State who did not want his name mentioned in the press said the APC was being careful in announcing the zoning of its presidential ticket in order to avoid internal crisis at this crucial time
According to him,. “The leadership of the party is being guided by wisdom in whatever they do. At the right time, the party would make its decision on the matter made known to party members and sympathizers.’
As both APC and PDP continue to adopt the waiting game the narrative is clear, one zone cannot produce the national chairman and presidential candidate at the same time, judging by past antecedents.
