Four Takeaways From Manchester United’s Dreadful 4-0 Loss To Brighton

Manchester United will officially register their lowest Premier League points tally as they suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion, who are on track for their highest league finish since finishing 13th in the 1981/82 First Division.

Champions League football now mathematically impossible for the Red Devils as they will now settle for Europa League or Europa Conference League football next season.

Brighton went into the clash still without a win at the Amex stadium in 2022 but they were determined to change that narrative against a lacklustre Manchester United as Moises Caicedo scored his first Premier League goal in only his sixth start as the 20-year-old struck a low effort past David De Gea to give the home side a half time lead.

It went from bad to worse for United early in the second half, as their defence was breached for the 32nd time on the road, bringing yet another unwanted record dating back to 1989/90. Marc Cucurella smashed in his first goal in Brighton colours since signing in the summer of 2021. Pascal Groß and Leandro Trossard then piled the misery on Ralf Ragnick’s men as they suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat which pretty much summed up their dreadful 2021/22 campaign.

Here are key facts from the game as Brighton beat Man United 4-0;

• Brighton’s Moises Caicedo has become the 100th player to score his first ever Premier League goal against Manchester United.

• Manchester United have conceded 4+ goals in 12 Premier League games since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, as many times as they did in 810 Premier League games under Ferguson.

• Manchester United have conceded 56 goals in the Premier League this season, their most in a single campaign in the competition.

• Manchester United’s defeat leaves them on 58 points with just one Premier League game remaining this season, guaranteeing that 2021-22 will see their lowest ever point total in a single campaign in the competition (previously 64 in 2013-14).
