Controversy is trailing the explosion that rocked the Sabon-Gari area of Kano on Tuesday with residents in the vicinity of the explosion alleging it was sparked by a suicide bomber contrary to the account of the authorities.

GWGNG reports that an explosion on Tuesday morning rocked the Sabon-Gari area of Kano that is inhabited mostly by non-indigenes leaving nine persons dead.

Although it was initially claimed that the explosion took place in a primary school in the area, the Kano State government said the explosion, which affected buildings around the area, including a private primary school, Winners, was from an animal food shop opposite the school, along Aba road.

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, also corroborated the police account that the explosion was caused by a gas explosion, said its personnel recovered nine bodies from the scene of the incident, thus disputing claims by the police.

However, residents of the area debunked the claim of a gas explosion with some of them saying that it was a suicide bomber who triggered the explosion.

“We are the ones to tell you what happened. Were they here,” Lennie Ujaja proprietor of the Winners Primary School said in debunking the claims of the authorities of a gas cylinder explosion.

“It was a suicide bomber. The target was the school but we thank God that it was averted,” he said.

Nura Abdullahi, the Kano State coordinator of NEMA debunked the claim of a suicide bomber saying that it was a gas explosion.

“There is a welding shop there, or have they denied it?” Abdullahi said.
