How PDP Lost Grip Of South-east

Published

on

The south-east zone  used had until now been a safe enclave of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). But that may change soon as the party is losing many chieftains to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political parties.

The recent defection of former governor of Anambra   State and presidential aspirant of PDP, Peter Obi is one out of several defections of south-east chieftains of the party to other political parties. Obi until his recent defection was one of the popular aspirants of the party with the hope of clinching the PDP ticket in the  presidential primary of the party.

Apart from Obi, Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy senate president and governorship aspirant in Enugu State suddenly withdrew from the governorship primary of the party. Also in Abia State, former senate minority leader Eyinannya Abaribe who is aspiring to be governor of the state withdrew from the governorship race and resigned as senate minority leader of the party.

Abaribe has now joined the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA and is to contest the Abia South Senate seat with Governor Okezie Ikpeazu who picked up the PDP ticket.

The leadership of the party in South-east would not forget in a hurry the impact of the defection of Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State to APC had on the party in the zone.  Though these leaders did not disclose the reason behind their defection, observers believe it might not be unconnected with the marginalization the people have suffered in the party since the return of democracy twenty years ago.

The National Chairman of PDP, Iyorchia Ayu who also understood the problem promised to address their grievances if the party is elected into office in 2023. Ayu made the promise in Owerri, Imo State, during a reception organised for the party’s national secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu,

However, to many Igbo leaders the promise to address their marginalisation was below expectation as what they expect to hear from the party chairman is how the party would support the ambition of aspirants from the zone to produce the presidential candidate of the party in 2023.

If the gale of defection continues, the result of the party from the zone in the 2023  general elections may be shocking.
