How Okowa Became Number One Choice As Atiku Running Mate
By GWGNG Political Editor
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has emerged at the top of the considerations for a running mate to Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP GWGNG has learnt.
Governor Udom Emmanuel is a second prospect but is said to be a distant consideration in the consideration of the camp of Atiku.
GWGNG learnt that besides the help poured in to assist Atiku in the pursuit of his ambition, that Okowa commandeered delegates from Delta State to support the former vice president despite the fact that they were not financially induced like delegates from many other states.
A delegate from Delta State who opened up to GWGNG disclosed that Okowa told them to have a long term view of the issue by investing their votes for Atiku with the prospect that they would gain in the long run.
“Anybody telling you that Atiku gave us money is lying. Our governor told us to look towards the future and not to eat our future,” the political actor from Delta State told GWGNG.
The major challenge to Okowa’s emergence in the view of the Atiku camp had been the relationship between the Delta governor and his predecessor, Chief James Ibori.
The former vice president and former Governor James Ibori are known to be political buddies and Atiku campaign officials had feared that dealing with Okowa could be injurious to the relationship with the former Delta Governor.
However, the outcome of the primaries in Delta and the rapid success of the Okowa forces over the Ibori forces may have convinced the Atiku camp of the resilience of the incumbent Delta State governor in the politics of Delta.
The prospect of Governor Emmanuel is said to be secondary to Okowa. Akwa Ibom delegates were said to have unanimously poured their 31 votes to Emmanuel. The remaining seven votes were said to have come from Benue State with the patronage of Senator Gabriel Suswam who was Governor Emmanuel’s campaign manager.
Meanwhile, there are some stakeholders who are also inching for Governor Nyesom Wike to be considered for the position on the strength of his performance in the primary election where he came second to Atiku.
