Concern In PDP Over Rivers As APC Aims To Lock Lagos, Kano

With Kano and Lagos States controlled by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, the inclination of Governor Nyesom Wike in Rivers State has become a matter of concern given that the state produces the highest number of votes from traditional Peoples Democratic Party, PDP strongholds.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Rivers State with 3.2 million registered voters is only topped by Lagos (6.5 million), Kano 5.4 million and Kaduna 3.9 million all of which are presently controlled by the APC.

It would be recalled that Wike took second place in the PDP presidential primary after a bitter campaign that was shadowed with permutations on zoning.

Expectations from Wike’s supporters that he would be compensated with the position of running mate were dashed after Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State was called up for the position.

The nomination of Okowa according to multiple sources was upon the claim that he was seen as more calm for the position. Okowa was also believed to have worked for the emergence of Atiku more than any other governor in the South-South.

Those factors according to sources, explain why Atiku chose him despite the recommendation of Wike by the committee constituted by the party to help select a vice-presidential candidate.

So after the second snub, concerns were being expressed in the party on the possible loss of the traditional two million votes from Rivers that have gone the way of the PDP in every presidential election.

Following his return to Port-Harcourt, Wike reportedly played host to Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State who the Rivers State governor had publicly fought after he defected to the APC. Both men claimed to have reconciled after the visit last weekend. Like Wike, Umahi also came out losing the in the APC presidential primaries.

“The PDP needs to do something and pretty fast to assuage the people of Rivers,” a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said in expressing his concern.
