The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Tanko Muhammad is set to resign on account of alleged ill-health, Arise Television is reporting.

The reported resignation is against the background of simmering crisis in the judiciary triggered by the protest of fellow Justices of the court who accused the embattled Chief Justice of maladministration and of denying them their rights and suppressing working conditions of the justices.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Arise TV quoted two sources as confirming the resignation.

Efforts to confirm the news were ongoing.

Earlier this news website had reported that Nigeria’s apex court was in tumult after a leaked letter from the Supreme Court justices accusing Chief Justice Ibrahim Tanko, CJN of maladministration, diversion of necessary funds among other misdeeds came to fore.

It was an unprecedented act in the history of Nigeria’s Supreme Court for the justices to rise in revolt at the alleged actions of the country’s number one jurist.

“The Justices reiterated the fact that they are serving this country diligently and to the best of their ability and as such deserves the best compared to how they are being treated by the present CJN,”.

“The Justices reminded the CJN of the facts that they resolve disputes between the Executive and the Legislature including all manner of disagreements, between governments and individuals and how it would be a tragedy if the Nigerian public were to know that they are unable to resolve their own problems internally without going public due to neglect and lack of taking to corrections by the CJN.

“The Justices demanded that the CJN act before it is too late as all efforts in the past to resolve their complaints have yielded no result. The Justices recall that the CJN reluctantly called a Justices’ meeting on the 23rd day of March 2022 after several persistent requests to hold the meeting.

It is not known if the reported decision of the Chief Justice Muhammad to resign was on account of the rebellion from his brother justices or on account of ill-health.
