How Humility Earned Senator Eyakenyi Akwa Ibom Deputy Governorship Slot

Eyakenyi Akwa Ibom

Fortune has smiled on Dr (Mrs) Akon Etim Eyakenyi, the serving  senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District as she has been named the Deputy Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State.

She got the position without much Ado while many male political figures in the party lobbied in the state and even in Abuja to be picked. But the party and it’s candidate beam the searchlight on the woman of substance who is no push over in Akwa Ibom politics.

Many factors could have worked for the Senator to have been found worthy of the position by the party’s governorship candidate, Pastor Eno Umo.

Among the many factors is her unprecedented humility.

She was screened by the PDP Deputy Governorship Screening Committee on Wednesday, June 22 alongside 27 other state  running mates of the party at the PDP secretariat, Abuja.

Seeing herself as the face of Akwa Ibom women in government, she told journalists after being screened that she will represent the interest of women in government.

In her words, she said ” I am going to represent the slot of the women but I am going as a mother for the 31 local government of Akwa Ibom State covering both men, youth, elderly.

“I am going there to serve, to set a standard and ensure that after me, another woman can pick up the position, I will also ensure that women have their due and right at the executive, legislative and party level.

“I am also going to be a model and standard to every woman in Akwa Ibom State.”

She appreciated  the party, the governor of Akwa Ibom and stakeholders who approved that a woman be given the slot of deputy governor for the first time.

Senator Eyakenyi has always acknowledged the grace of God for every position she attain in life.

She said ” I want to start by saying that for every position, God is the  one that identifies who to put into position, but people also have a way of  pushing one to a position. I belong to the Peoples Democratic Party, the PDP in my state. I have been there since inception and I have contributed my own quota to my people under the umbrella. I am accessible to the people. I have served my people in different capacity.”

Speaking on how she has been getting appointments and positions  in a male dominated environment, she said  “I want to say that I identified what the needs of my people were, I identified what they definitely wanted me to do”

She said her  own philosophy is service and  commitment to humanity.

Always at home with her people in her senatorial district, the Senator said “Without pride, if you have access to my people in Akwa Ibom South senatorial district, they will tell you that this time they have a Senator. If you have listening to radio, online , social media you will see that Senator Akon Eyakenyi is working.”

“The three things that a good Senator or a good representative is expected  to do are good quality representation in and out of the floor of the Senate on behalf of your people, the oversight function and then the briefing of the people.

The deputy governorship candidate called on the people of Akwa Ibom to fully support the party, herself and the governorship candidate to win the coming election.

She said “it is by voting us into power that we can continue the good work and developmental strides of our efficient governor, Emmanuel Udom.”.

What I Experienced In Detention – FirstNews Editor Narrates

Published

By

The Editor of FirstNews Online Newspaper, Segun Olatunji, has narrated his ordeal in the detention of the Nigerian military.

Recall gunmen suspected to be military officers had invaded Olatunji’s residence at Iyana Odo, Abule Egba area of Lagos state, on March 15, and took him away.

Since his abduction, there has been a strong outcry from family members, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) calling on President Bola Tinubu to order his immediate release.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/28/six-prominent-lawmakers-resigns-from-labour-party/

However, on Thursday morning, the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) was said to have released Olatunji after spending two weeks in its custody.

Speaking at a press conference shortly after his release, Olatunji said while in detention, he was interrogated about certain stories that FirstNews had carried.

He added that he was questioned about his stories regarding the Chief of Defence Intelligence and the Chief of Staff to the President.

Olatunji asserted that those behind his detention are part of the government, who are not happy with what FirstNews is doing, and are they bent on punishing him.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/28/lis-of-countries-with-the-lowest-salary-incomes/

The press briefing was organised by the leaderships of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the International Press Institute (IPI).

He said: “At first, they put me in a cell. There I was left with leg and hand cuffs. And at a point, one of the officers came and tightened the right leg and the right hand and I was there growing in pain. And they didn’t loosen it until about two or three days later. And at that time, the whole part of my body was getting node. In fact, up till now, I can still feel the pains.

“While in detention, they were asking me questions about certain stories that FirstNews had carried. They first told me that I was one of those abusing the chief of defence intelligence. They didn’t say much about that.

“Then they also asked a story we carried about the Chief of Staff to the president, and that was a major thing. That’s why I told some people earlier that those behind my arrest are people behind the corridors of power, who are not happy with what FirstNews is doing, and are they bent on taking their own pound of flesh.”

Her tweet read, “This lady has been thrown out of her marital home for continuing with a defilement case of her 8-year-old child after pressure to drop the case since it’s her brother in law. They want the case to be resolved at home not to bring shame. The way rapists get to have community support.

How To Cope With  A Self-Centred Husband

Published

on

By

self-centred husband

Getting married is a lifetime commitment that must not be compromised, however, having a self-centered husband might be detrimental to your mental health. Here are seven ways to deal with such a self-centered husband.

Find out his triggers

Look out for the causes of his actions. You may be able to deal with your narcissistic husband better by learning about the insecurities he has been frantically attempting to hide. Consult with his friends or family to get their advice on how to handle his issue.

Know his true behaviour

Your self-centered husband might resist your authority if you confront him about his actions. But being aware of his genuine conduct will enable you to find the best answer.

Stop focusing on him

Your opinions might soon seem to be irrelevant. Stop concentrating on him and  then take some time for yourself to work toward your objectives.

Make a decision

Declare your rights and let him know how his actions and comments are affecting your life. Additionally, be consistent and explicit about the behavior you anticipate from him.

Seek assistance

Get in touch with your friends and family if you are attempting to make your relationship healthy but are dissatisfied with the results.

Speak with them and solicit their assistance, by conversing with them, you’ll gain confidence. Additionally, if you seem to be experiencing any anxiety issues, you must consult a doctor.

Insist on immediate action

It’s crucial to be clear about what you want, need, or expect and to express yourself quietly and softly, without any confrontation. Inform them that you would only meet their requests once they have complied with yours.

 Keep support system

If you spend time with others, your self-centered husband can feel resentful and desire your undivided attention. It may be simpler for your husband to exert control over your life if you are not interacting with a support network. Consequently, it’s critical to surround yourself with people who are giving you the proper support.

GWG.ng reports that the value of any nation’s currency is determined by aggregate supply and demand.

The forces of Supply and demand are themselves influenced by a number of factors, including interest rates, inflation, capital flow, and money supply.

The most common method to value currency is through exchange rates. The two main exchange rate systems are fixed rate and floating rate systems.

Investors and participants closely monitor these parallel market rates for a more immediate reflection of currency dynamics.

Looking For The Living Among The Dead

By Gabriel Agbo

Published

on

By

Living among the dead

“But very early on Sunday morning the women came to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. They found that the stone covering the entrance had been rolled aside. So they went in, but they couldn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus.

They were puzzled, trying to think what could have happened to it. Suddenly, two men appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes. The women were terrified and bowed low before them. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking in a tomb for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He has risen from the dead! Don’t you remember what he told you back in Galilee” (Luke 24:1-6).

There are so many religions in the world today, and Christianity being one of them is also easily recognized as the largest. But having the largest followership in the world is not just what makes Christianity unique.

The issues are that, first, other religions are human efforts searching for the supernatural, the supreme being or the invisible. But Christianity is God’s effort in search of the lost man. The former involves human ideologies, imaginations and methods, but the later is a divine – initiated intervention, God coming down from heaven, putting on the nature of man in order to save man. Secondly, another difference between Christianity and other religions is that Jesus lived in this sinful world without getting entangled.

Thirdly, among the founders of the religions, he was the only person who predicated and willingly submitted to death, and also came out from the grave to live forever. While all others who claim to be saviours or messengers of God are still held by the powers of death and grave. In fact, this is the essence of the Christian faith. That our saviour died, was buried, and on the third day he broke the chains of death and the walls of grave, coming out majestically to reign as the LORD of Lords and King of kings forever.

So, when we celebrate Easter, we should always remember that the event remains the most dynamic and efficacious divine efforts to unite us with our maker. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ remitted our sins, brought us back to God and gave us eternal hope. Without his resurrection man would have been eternally hopeless. Look at the way Apostle Peter saw it while addressing the Jews, “But you followed God’s prearranged plan.

With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to the cross and murdered him. However, God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life again, for death could not keep him in its grip. King David said this about him: ‘I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is filled with joy, and my mouth shouts his praises!

My body rests in hope. For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy one to rot in the grave. You have shown me the way of life, and you will give me wonderful joy in your presence?  Dear brothers, think about this! David wasn’t referring to himself when he spoke these words I have quoted, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us.

But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on David’s throne as the Messiah. David was looking into the future and predicting the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that the Messiah would not be left among the dead and that his body would not rot in the grave. This prophecy was speaking of Jesus, whom God raised from the dead, and we all are witness of this. Now he sits on the throne of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand” Act 2:23-33 (N L T).

I quoted these long verses so that we could have the full view of a man who stayed, worked and knew a lot about Jesus. He (Peter) started by telling us that everything about Jesus including his death and resurrection went according to God’s plan. He said that it was ‘God’s prearrangement’. The role that Jesus played in our salvation is paramount.

Before Jesus came, God initiated several sacrifices and ordinances to try to remit the sins of man, but all were not able to totally eradicate the guilt and consequence of it. There were sacrifices of bulls, goats, lamb, etc. But the blood of those animals could not do the job. Then he unfolded his prearranged plan. And that plan was that his only begotten son Jesus would pay (once and for all) the ultimate price to save mankind by dying on the cross.

Jesus died for you. He died so that you will live. His coming brought to you, to mankind salvation from sin, deliverance from Satan, demons and evil powers. He also brought to us protection from destruction, healing from sicknesses and diseases. Peace in the place of trouble, fear and restlessness. Prosperity instead of poverty and wretchedness, and hope for eternal life.

Are all these working in your life today? If not, then Easter is not fully manifesting in you. Jesus’ sacrifice automatically activates all the promises of God in your life. He indeed gave up all to achieve all for us. He is the only savior of mankind -the only way to God. Why are you looking for salvation where there is none? Accept him into your life today and all these will be released upon you. Happy celebration!

SDP Witness Says He Was Not Near Kogi During Guber Poll

Published

By

Kogi SDP witness

The star witness of the Social Democratic Party, SDP and its candidate in the November 11 governorship election in Kogi State, in a dramatic twist, on Monday, told the Election Petition Tribunal that he was not in Kogi State on the day of the election.

The star witness, who is a data analyst with the Independent National Electoral Commission,  said this as he completed his Evidence-In-Chief and was cross-examined after 11 long days of his testimony before the Tribunal.

The witness, Abdulmalik Njidda, who was summoned by the SDP, had earlier testified to events that took place during the election in Kogi State, with regard to entries on the BVAS machines used for the election in Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okene, Okehi, Ogori Magongo and Lokoja Local Government Areas of the State.

However, drama ensued when, during cross examination by Counsel to the Governor of Kogi State, the APC and INEC, he turned around to say he was nowhere near Kogi State on the day of the election.

The INEC data analyst confirmed that he was posted to Imo State for the Governorship election, which held on the same day the election in Kogi State was held.

Specifically, the SDP witness admitted that he was never at any of the polling units complained about on election day in Kogi State and in respect of whose BVAS machines he examined before the Tribunal.

He said he was therefore not in a position to know or show how the BVAS machines were operated at those polling units.

In his further testimony under cross examination, the witness also admitted that as an INEC data analyst, he was never assigned any function on the day of the election in Kogi State, meaning that he had no reason to operate the BVAS machines he was brought to Court to prove its contents.

When further cross examined on the serial number of the BVAS machines that he was called to demonstrate in Court, the INEC data analyst said he did not know the serial number of the machines, adding that the BVAS machines he demonstrated in Court were not the entirety of the BVAS machines used for the election in Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okene, Okehi, Ogori Magongo and Lokoja Local Government Areas of Kogi State.

Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN represented INEC; Dr. Alex Izinyon, SAN, represented Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and E.C. Ukala, SAN, represented APC.

In summary, the SDP witness said he had no business with the election that took place in Kogi State, that it was the duty of the Presiding Officers to operate BVAS machines at any polling unit; to have the picture of Form EC8A on the respective BVAS used in their polling units and to transmit the result to IRev.

He noted that BVAS machines used for an election were meant to contain Form EC8A but that the BVAS machines he demonstrated in open court did not all have the picture of Form EC8A.

The witness added that he could not tell which ones had the picture of the Form EC8A used at the various polling units.

Attempts by Counsel to the Petitioner, J.S. Okutepa, SAN, to repair the testimony of the INEC official through re-examination questions were objected to by the defence team and were overruled as the objections were well rooted in law.

Several Feared Dead, Injured, As Youths Clash Over Land In Plateau State

Youths clash in plateau

Many people have reportedly been killed and houses burnt following a clash between rival youths in the Mikang Local Government Area of Plateau State.

GWG.ng gathered that many people were also injured during the clash said to have started on Saturday night between Taroh and Motola youths in the locality and lasted until the early hours of Sunday.

The tragic situation was disclosed by the Plateau state Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, in Jos on Sunday.

The commissioner, who blamed the situation on disputed land in the area, said, “I have just called the Mikang Local Government Chairman over the issue who told me that it is something that could have been avoided and not allowed to escalate to the point that people lost their lives; and at the moment, there are persons receiving treatment at the hospital.

“It started as a result of a dispute over land. According to the LG chairman, the land in question cannot even produce six bags of rice, and you know when people are attached to their land, they can go the extra mile, and it is something they could have controlled their nerves, but somehow, it got to a point where others too joined them and houses were burnt down, and people were maimed.

“But as it is, the affected areas have gotten relative peace because the Divisional Police Officers in Mikang, Lantang North, and LGAs have come together to address the problem. So, the LG chairman has been on the matter since 8am today (Sunday) to pacify the people and to make them see the need to embrace peace.”
