NAPTIP Rescues 12-Year-Old Girl Forced Into Marriage With 50-Year-Old Man

A 12-year-old girl who was allegedly forced into marriage with a 50-year-old man as his third wife has been rescued by operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking (NAPTIP). The rescue operation happened in the Adaka region of Makurdi, Benue State.

The rescue effort came after an activist, Lucky Iduh, and a Makurdi-based humanist, Ukan Kurugh, raised the alarm about the kid on Tuesday. This drew the notice of NAPTIP officers in Makurdi.

According to Lucky’s Facebook post, the young girl’s family allegedly forced her to marry the 50-year-old farmer as his third wife. This happened a few months ago after she was initially informed that she would be taken to where she would reside and attend school.

When she realized that she had been brought to the man’s house as his third wife, the girl began raising alarm and seeking help to flee the house. That drew the attention of neighbors, who began begging for assistance for the girl,” he explained.

Confirming the minor’s rescue, Mrs. Gloria Bai, NAPTIP Commander, Makurdi Zonal Command, stated that preliminary investigations revealed she was forced to marry and had been in the forced marriage for about three months. The man had been abusing her since then. However, efforts were being made to apprehend the man who has fled his home.

“Unfortunately, the rain began to fall. We were able to save the girl who was forced to marry, but the man had fled. We’re on it, and our police are already on the lookout for the man if he’s seen.”

Mrs. Bai gave assurance that the case will be thoroughly examined. “The girl will also be transported to the hospital for medical checkup and she will undergo adequate counseling. We’ll investigate how she ended up in his residence. If he broke the law, we’ll take him to court,” she vowed.
