Aregbesola Leaves Mixed Signals After Winning Unit For APC
Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola won his polling unit for the All Progressives Congress, APC but there are indications that the larger Ilesha area of the state that had in the past been the foothold of the party may have slipped to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Aregbesola was not available for the election and his aides claim that he was not invited by the campaign council to play any role.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Aregbesola and his successor Gboyega Oyetola who is seeking a second term have been in a trench warfare for about three years now and the former governor had raised opposition to a second term for the incumbent governor.
The bid to stop Oyetola in the APC primary failed woefully. Some die-hard allies of Aregbesola moved over to the PDP, while some others stayed back.
Aregbesola was reported to have made a public pronouncement instructing his allies to vote for their party, APC. However, whether that instruction was passed down to the grassroots was in doubt on Saturday.
The former governor was himself not available having travelled out of the country reportedly on an official assignment.
How Aregbesola would be out of the country on a day that the Osun governorship election was holding was an issue that would bewilder many.
If the votes in Ilesa, which had in the past been known to be Aregbesola’s base should go to the PDP, then it would leave a taste of bitterness that would make the fight between the former and incumbent governors for a long time.
