Political actors in Delta State were in a state of suspense on Friday after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC failed to list a governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the forthcoming election.

The failure of the commission according to sources was upon the court judgment obtained by Mr. David Edevbie against the nomination of Mr Sheriff Oborevwori who was disqualified.

Though it was a declarative judgment the onus was on the PDP to submit Edevbie as its candidate. However, the party it was gathered was yet to do so, hence the space for the party was left blank as INEC displayed the list of candidates for the governorship election in the state.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG had earlier reported the Delta State branch of the PDP as calling on party stakeholders to be calm that the issues at stake would sooner than later be resolved with INEC.

Edevbie is generally regarded as a protegee of the penultimate governor of the state, Chief James Ibori. Oborevwori who is presently the speaker of the House of Assembly is generally regarded as the candidate of the outgoing governor of the state, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa who is also the vice-presidential candidate of the party.

Though Oborevwori soundly emerged in the party primary defeating all other aspirants albeit with the support of the governor, Edevbie had gone to court raising questions as to the qualification of the speaker to contest citing discrepancies in his name and other documents.

Meanwhile, the main opposition in Delta State, the All Progressives Congress, APC which is flying Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as its candidate in the election it was gathered has been relishing the prospect of flying into the election without a PDP candidate on the INEC list.

Though Omo-Agege who is the deputy president of the Senate is ordinarily a formidable candidate, his camp has also been enthralled by the prospect of going into the contest without a PDP candidate.

The PDP has been in control of the Delta State since the advent of the Fourth Republic and has won all governorship elections conducted by INEC.
