The Government of Rivers State has described as “fake news” a viral report alleging that Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has set up a Marriage Monitoring Task Force in the State.

The Government in a statement issued by Kelvin Ebiri, special assistant on media to the governor said that it considered it as spurious and morally offensive the viral report alleging that the State had ordered ‘any Rivers man willing to marry must have at least 5Million Naira or a property in the equivalent of the stipulated amount.’

“Although fake news is not a new phenomenon, it is most appalling, and wrong on part of those who are deliberately circulating misleading and incorrect information to the unsuspecting public,” the government said in the statement denying the claim of the establishment of a Marriage Task Force in Rivers State.

“The State will not hesitate to take necessary legal action against the purveyors of this malicious news if they don’t desist from their morally reprehensible act.”

The reaction from the government on a Marriage Task Force in Rivers State came in the wake of public anxiety on the possible encroachment of the government into the private matter of marriage with the express claim that it was wrong for the government to be found regulating the institution.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that in northern some states of the country that some state governments have in the past been reported as providing incentives for singles to get married.
