Viktor Kiplangat has won the first male marathon gold medal for Uganda as two other East Africans made a clean sweep for the top three on the second day of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

It was an uneventful end for Australian Liam Adams who led for a significant time as the race opened earlier as he ended the race fourth without a medal despite the earlier enthusiasm that shadowed his lead earlier in the race.

Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu took second while Michael Githai from Kenya came third in the highly competitive race.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the Kenyan bronze marathon medalist, Michale Githai was brought to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games as a travelling reserve but was called upon to put on his running shoes that arose when some Kenyan qualifiers for the games were disqualified.

The gold medal marathon victory for Viktor Kiplangat almost turned into a disaster towards the end of the race after he took a wrong course near the finishing point.

He had to return to the correct course but happily for him and watching Ugandans back at home, the distance with the Tanzanian Alphonce Simbu was much and the detour did not affect his position as the race leader, even if it minimally affected his finishing time.

The female marathon is in progress.
