Okechukwu abandon Southeast presidency Tinubu

All Progressives Congress, APC chieftain, Mr Osita Okechukwu has explained why he abandoned his long and vociferous call for President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor to come from the Southeast after Asiwaju Bola Tinubu emerged APC presidential candidate.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Okechukwu, who is the director-general of the Voice of Nigeria, VON had been at the head of the calls for the next president to come from the Southeast on the claim that the region was the only tripod in the polity yet to produce a president in recent history.

He had gone forward in championing what he termed as a Zikist-Buhari Movement in the hope of colouring the image of President Buhari with that of Nigeria’s pre-eminent statesman, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday on why he abandoned the call for a president from the Southeast, Okechukwu in an interview on Arise Tv said:

“When we started the campaign I was one of those that issued a statement calling on Asiwaju as a kingmaker to support someone from the Southeast and he issued a statement that the kingmaker wants to be president.”

However, admitting that his call did not get traction leading to the emergence of Tinubu at the national convention, he said:

“As a foundation member of the APC and as someone who has been in politics for more than 44 years, there was a primary that was held in open daylight and nobody complained that it was rigged and Asiwaju emerged and I have no other option except to back the candidate of my party.

“He won the election. Yes, he was not my preference at the beginning of the race but at the end of the race, he won. As a sportsman and as a party man, I have every right and every duty to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his vice-president Kashim Shettima.”
