Manchester United Start 2022/23 Season With Home Loss Against Brighton
Manchester United started the new season on a note of despair after new manager Erik ten Hag led the team to a humiliating 1-2 loss to Brighton. It was the team’s first competitive game for the season under Erik ten Hag.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the former record league champions was down 0-2 after two goals from Pascal Gross at half time. That score line was despite the fact that the home team was in better possession of the ball.
However, that was as far as it went as Brighton had more shots at goal than Manchester United.
New signings Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez started for the hosts, with Cristiano Ronaldo – their top scorer last season – on the bench.
But there were familiar problems for United as they were punished for a lethargic start when Pascal Gross fired in from Danny Welbeck’s dangerous ball.
It got worse for United when Gross found the target again before half-time, firing in from close range after David de Gea parried Solly March’s shot.
United, who were better in the second half, got a lifeline when Alexis Mac Allister turned into his own net as he attempted to keep the ball out after it bounced off Diogo Dalot’s back.
Brighton had to withstand some heavy pressure but managed to hold firm and secure a first win at Old Trafford.
While Manchester United with the one goal they scored may have climbed out of the relegation zone, they may well take comfort that Manchester City which won the league in the last season started with a loss.
