Nigerians have been reacting after two of the leading presidential candidates in the 2023 General Election, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Mr Peter Obi exchanged words over the culpability of their supporters in pushing fake news against one another.

GWG reports that the clash was sparked by a report alleging that Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo had in a letter addressed to Tinubu urged him to step down for Obi and take care of his health.

However, Akufo-Addo, later denied the report, stating that it was total false and mischievous, adding that it is not in his place to interfere in the internal affairs and politics of Nigeria.

Reacting, the Tinubu Camp on Wednesday slammed Peter Obi, telling him to caution his Nigerian supporters to desist from spreading false information against the APC presidential candidate.

Tinubu’s organisation insisted that Peter Obi’s supporters have been purveying fake news to the general public to defame the character of the APC presidential flag bearer.

In a swift response,  Obi, in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Valentine Obienyem, frowned at the Tinubu’s camp linking his supporters to fake reports about Tinubu, insisting that publications from the party are always properly signed and spelt out. The Obi camp further accused the Tinubu campaign of keeping mute when his campaigners dished out offensive articles against him even in his newspaper.

Nigerians were on Thursday reacting to the media war between Tinubu and Obi and giving their judgments on the conduct of the supporters.

GWG gathered some of the reactions:

@General_Oluchi: “So Tinubu has joined the Wailers Club to report Obidients to Peter Obi? Who will caution all the agberos threatening violence on Obidients for him? Tinubu running for President is the biggest insult to Nigerians. He should drop off the race and stop being a nuisance.”

@kcnaija: “I thought Peter Obi and his supporters were insignificant in the presidential race? I thought he doesn’t have structure. This is still morning. They have not grind the beans and it is smelling.”

@Girl_isBlessed: “Tinubu did not apologize for “they will labour till they die”. He did not apologize when his shoe shiner wrote their “Obi-tuary” in his own newspaper. His boys are making threats here but he is warning Peter Obi that didn’t say a word. THIS IS NOT 2015.”

@AfamDeluxo: “Bola Tinubu’s team are dishing out all kinds of fake news using Bots account and alluding it to Peter Obi supporters. They dished a statement, credited to Ghanaian President with one of those accounts. These guys are desperate & ready to do anything to tarnish Obidents!”

@ronaldnzimora: “When Tinubu said that Peter Obi and his supporters will “labour in vain until they die”, you fugghaissies didn’t remember decorum. Small “hand dey shake, leg dey shake” and una dey cry.

“Nobody has wished him death yet naa. Make una never drink palmwine, because meat dey come.”

@oga_pharmacist: “I’m rather sad that Mr. Obi has to be severally put in precarious situations like this, where he has to be caution people who say they support him or even having to apologise on his behalf.

“He is a fine gentleman, it would have been great to see his supporters take after him.”

@Bj7super: “Tinubu should get this right. In Labour Party, Peter Obi is not the principal. The people, Nigerians, are. The people are the ones contesting using Peter Obi as the Vehicle. “Your complaint should go to Nigerians, not Peter Obi.“
