International Youth Day: Lagos Wants Residents To Imbibe Road Safety
On the occasion of the International Youth Day, the Lagos State Government has urged Nigerian youths to imbibe the culture of adhering to road safety guidelines while driving.
Mr Olusegun Dawodu, the Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, delivered the state government’s message on Friday at a ceremony to mark the 2022 United Nations International Youth Day.
The ceremony was organised by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in collaboration with Youth Walk
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme for this year’s ceremony is “International Solidarity: Creating a World for all Ages”.
Dawodu commended the FRSC’s interest in the fight against road crashes which he described as the highest killer of youths.
He regretted that road crashes had killed many promising youths and emphasised the need to increase enlightenment to safe driving culture.
The commissioner particularly noted that Mr Tayo Sanyaolu, an aide to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was also a victim of road traffic crash, and described his demise as a great loss to the state.
He advised the youth to avoid speeding, driving when drunk and also using the phone when on the steering.
In his remarks, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, said that the event was targeted at creating road safety awareness among the Nigerian youth.
Ogungbemide added that the walk was also to commiserate with the Lagos State Government on the demise of Sanyaolu.
In her response, Mrs Joyce Efetie, a FRSC official, appreciated the commissioner for making out time to receive the group in spite of the short notice.
She pointed out that the FRSC was mandated to create a safe motoring environment for everyone, especially the youths.
