Ayu On The Brink As PDP Leaders Share Video Of His Pledge To Resign
The embattled national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Iyorcha Ayu was under fire on Tuesday as party leaders threw back to him an old video of him promising to resign in the interest of party unity in the event the presidential candidate comes from the North.
GWG.NG reports that Ayu has been under pressure to step down to allow for balancing of the party with most of the top positions weighed towards the North.
The pressure nonetheless, supporters of the national chairman were, however, rallying to ward off the pressure both on television circuits and through proxy meetings.
In the old video of a television interview with Arise Television, Ayu while campaigning for the office of national chairman had promised to step down in the event the presidential candidate comes from the north in the interest of the party if asked to do so.
However, in recent assertions supporters of Ayu have been alleging that he only promised to resign if the party wins the presidential election.
However, in a rebuke to his critics, Ayu on Monday raised the stakes when he affirmed that he has a four year mandate and would not leave before then.
However, in the interview with Arise TV, Ayu when he was asked what he would do should the presidential candidate emerge from the North, he said:
“Party positions we have agreed are not tied to positions of executive and legislative positions. However, I’m a very, very democratic person I will do everything to promote the interest and image of my party.
“If the PDP says I should step down after the presidential candidate emerges and happens to be in the North, I will be very glad to do so. Because what we want is to run to take over the government and run the government in the, the interest of Nigerians I will sacrifice anything to ensure that my party wins.”
A member of the National Executive Committee, NEC of the party reacting to the video clip told GWG.NG:
“Senator Ayu said if the party asks him to step down as soon as the party’s candidate emerges, he will do so as the focus is on winning. So let us await the decision of the party.
“That statement of hero of convention is one that a some section of the party can never associate with him as chairman. In a proper Democratic clime, he would have resigned the next day. However, whoever the next chairman is will give us a manifesto. He or she must save this party from delegate system of selecting anyone and make it a membership paying party.”
